In another step to discuss the formation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations will gather in Thailand’s beach resort town of Hua Hin on August 14.

Purpose of the meeting is to find ways to strengthen the grouping once it becomes the single community as planned by the end of 2015, and “how to respond effectively to the fast-changing global environment.”

Other issues discussed will be a universal healthcare policy, as well as environmental challenges such as the region’s haze problem.

Discussions in meetings will also include progress in the integration of other economic sectors, addressing gaps and challenges, and the way forward for regional integration beyond 2015.

There have been voices lately that some countries or regions are not entirely prepared for the AEC, such as Mindanao in the Southern Philippines or poorer countries such as Laos.

Many ASEAN countries also seem busy to intensify trade relations to large regional economies such as Japan and South Korea and to other trade blocs such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership or the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, rather than seeking closer ties to their own neighbours in ASEAN, promping critics to say that minister meetings should rather aim at presenting a real assessment of the possibilities to launch the AEC.

The meeting will also prepare talks for the upcoming Special Asean-China Foreign Ministers Meeting to be hosted by China from August 28-30 in Beijing. The talks will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the ASEAN-China Strategic Partnership.
