Cebu Pacific plans Qatar route

Cebu Pacific1The Philippines’ low-cost carrier Cebu Pacific Air said it is considering launching direct flights from Manila to the Qatari capital Doha.

Officials from the Manila-based airline, the largest in the Philippines, are expected in Qatar at the end of August to discuss the plans with government and aviation officials.

The only airline that currently serves the Doha-Manila route is Qatar Airways, although Philippines Airlines has said it is due to launch its own daily service from November 2. Qatar is home to a large Filipino expat population of approximately 200,000.

Earlier in 2013, Cebu Pacific announced that it would begin flying direct to Dubai, UAE from Manila daily from October 7. It will be the only airline in the Philippines that serves this route, taking into account the large number of Filipinos working in the UAE.

Cebu Pacific is The airline is a subsidiary of JG Summit Holdings, a large conglomerate in teh Philippines owned by the Gokongwei family. It flies to 34 domestic destinations and 20 international destinations in 14 countries, mainly in East Asia. The airline is banned from flying to the European Union on grounds of safety concerns. While the EU removed Philippines Airlines from its blacklist in July 2013, Cebu Pacific remained there.
