Construction for Dubai Expo already underway

Dubai ExpoConstruction works for the Dubai Expo 2020 seem to have already started, given satellite images showing that a huge logo of the event together with Dubai’s name have already been etched into the sand at the plot where the expo pavilions are about to be built.

The place where the logo can be seen will be the location for a flower-shaped central structure with radiating pavilions with a large open space around it. The structure is to be covered with a solar fabric that aims to generate half the expo’s required energy.

A canvas canopy will provide shade for visitors to the site during the day, while a photovoltaic panel-lined roof will light up at night for spectacular digital shows.

Later on, more than 2,000 apartments, banks, retail outlets and restaurants will be built on the 438-hectare site in Jebel Ali. Dubai hopes to draw 25 million people to the six-month-long expo. The emirate will need 80,000 new hotel rooms to accommodate them, official estimates suggest – about double the emirate’s already-generous current stock. A $8 billion extension of the Dubai metro is also planned, while the close proximity of the expo site to the new Al Maktoum International Airport should help boost traffic there.

Dubai expo locationAbout 30,000 volunteers will be required to help run a site that will host 300,000 people a day. The volunteers will be in addition to 275,000 jobs created in sectors ranging from transport, hospitality and hotels.
