Indonesia gets first ever Apple store

Asia iphoneGadget giant Apple will launch its first ever Apple store in Indonesia after it received approval from Indonesia’s Investment Coordinating Board to open a shop in the country’s capital Jakarta.

The investment board said Apple will invest between $2 million and $3 million for the store as well for an Indonesian online store portal. Observers have commented the news as a move by Apple to end the Indonesian consumers’ reliance on grey market imports of iPhone, iPads and iPods.

Apple has operated an online store plus distribution in Indonesia between 2008 and 2010, but halted operations in the country over shipping issues in late 2010. It kept the Website online in order to keep a presence and to show product prices, but instead of taking on orders, the company directed customers to authorised resellers.

There have also been unsubstantiated reports of Apple opening an office in Jakarta. Official opening dates for the Apple online store or the Jakarta location have yet to be announced.

Indonesia is also in the running to be a major new base for Taiwanese manufacturer Foxconn, which does final assembly of many Apple products, but the investment has been delayed.
