Investors sought for first Filipino musical production

Marco Polo musicalThe first musical written by a Filipino to debut on the world’s premier stages is looking for investors that allow it eventually to be played at London’s West End and the Broadway in New York.

“Marco Polo: An Untold Love Story” tells of the adventures of Marco Polo as he traveled from ancient Venice to the East in his quest for gold and new lands. The story revolves around a love story between Marco Polo and a Mongolian princess and the hurdles of love for two people from different cultures.

A concert version of the musical was shown at the Meralco Theater in Manila on August 10. The previews of the full musical will be held in February 2014. The Asian premiere will kick off in Singapore by the third quarter of 2014. Concerts and performances are set for other major Asian cities to drum up more investor interest in the West End production.

The musical has been written and composed by stage actor, singer and director Rogelio Saldo Chua with a 50-member international cast and artistic team, the majority of whom are seasoned Filipino theater professionals. Executive producer of the musical is Belgian Olivier J. Leonard, a development banker.

Colorful costumes and props amidst Venetian, Middle Eastern, Central Asian and Chinese settings will be extensively used while a 15-instrument orchestra is envisioned to include both Chinese and Western instruments. The musical was already registered under the seal of the copyright office of the US.
