Zamboanga City is center of a highly industrialised area in western Mindanao

An Israeli business delegation paid the Philippines a visit on February 20 to explore investment opportunities in Mindanao’s western town of Zamboanga in technology, water treatment and desalination, seed and agri-technology, as well as tourism, real estate development and homeland security.

The 14-person delegation, headed by Ran Cohen, president of the Israel Asia Chamber of Commerce, met with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry and was told that Zamboanga City was strategically located as the “front door” to the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore economic growth corridor and represented a favourable investment destination apart from usual areas such as Metro Manila, Cebu and Palawan.

Zamboanga is the only city that made a pitch to lure Israel investors into putting up trade and commerce relations in a dominantly Muslim region. The Philippine chamber said that the area will serve as a vital link once the ASEAN integration framework is realised in 2016.

Mindanao only recently ended its decade-long struggle and civil unrest to become a pacified region that is now ready for investments.
