Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej on October 13 passed away at age 88, succumbing to severe illnesses. He was the world’s longest-serving monarch, reigning the country for 70 years.

He died peacefully at 3:52 pm at the Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok, the palace said in an official statement.

The king was widely revered in Thailand. He was seen as a stabilising figure in a country hit by cycles of political turmoil and multiple coups.

He had been in poor health in recent years and made few public appearances. The palace had warned on October 9 that the king’s health was “not stable”.

According to a broadcast announcement by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, a period of mourning with lower flags will be held for 30 days, and civil servants wear black for one year as of October 14.

He also urged all sectors in the society to refrain from holding entertainment activities for one month.

Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn will succeed his father.

“The government will proceed with the succession. The government will inform the National Legislative Assembly that His Majesty the King appointed his heir on December 28, 1972,” he said, referring to to the date that the King’s son Vajiralongkorn, 64, was made Crown Prince.
