Malaysia declares state of emergency in haze areas

Kl hazeMalaysia declared a state of emergency in two parts of the southern state of Johor on June 23 after air pollution from illegal burning of forests and peat lands in Indonesia reached hazardous levels at more than 750 on the air pollution index. Any level above 300 is considered hazardous.

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Najib Razak signed a declaration for Muar and Ledang in the southern Johor state with immediate effect. 600 schools and regional airports have been shut.

“There should be no outdoor activities and people must stay indoors until further notice in these areas,” the order said.

Meanwhile, Indonesia has declared a state of emergency in the Riau region of Sumatra starting June 21, where the fires are moist intense.

In Singapore, the haze was easing on June 23 die to better wind conditions. The city state’s government said it will take action against the companies believed to be behind the fires.
