Mc halalImports of halal chicken to 369 McDonald’s restaurants across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region hit more than 12,000 tonnes in 2012, accounting for a 12.3 per cent rise from 2011, McDonald’s Arabia has announced.

Malaysia, the largest exporter of halal chicken to the GCC, as well as the country with the most obese population in ASEAN, was recently the recipient of a delegation from Kuwait who came to observe the strict and sophisticated halal procedures that are part of the food preparation process.

The Kuwaiti delegation, which included the Kuwaiti Director of Commercial Fraud and executives from McDonald’s, visited Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (JAKIM), an official Malaysian authority that supervises halal procedures, the Mac Food factory, and two certified halal slaughterhouses, where chickens are prepared under the supervision of JAKIM.

Approximately 1,200 employees work at both slaughterhouses, and all are holders of certificates provided by the authority.

“Ensuring that all ingredients and produce are halal is McDonald’s top priority,” said Yousif Abdulghani, the Managing Director of McDonald’s Middle East and Africa.

“All products served at all McDonald’s restaurants in the Middle East are halal, as all the ingredients are inspected and approved by local authorities and halal officers at the countries of export and by customs officials at the port of entry.”

In order to be deemed halal and become a certified supplier of McDonald’s in the Middle East, slaughterhouses must adhere to social responsibility policies on aspects concerning animal welfare, animal feed, as well as prohibition of deforestation and use of antibiotics.
