missworldPhilippine model and actress Megan Young was crowned Miss World 2013 in Bali, Indonesia, on September 28 in an event heavily guarded by armed riot police equipped with water canons who surrounded the venue in Nusa Dua order to keep the contestants and spectators inside safe.

Thousands of Muslim radicals held prayer services in a mosque in the capital city Jakarta to express their outrage and anger at the event which they called “whore contest” and “pornography”. Those at the prayer gathering were addressed by a Muslim preacher who lashed out at the pageant, which radicals claim goes against Islamic teaching.

Fortunately the event passed without incident but the issue of hardline Islamists demonstrating and taking a more aggressive approach has many people worried, as the Muslim minority in the Philippines has grown and recently became more vocal in its radical views.

The 23-year-old Megan Young, actually US-born, promised to be “the best Miss World ever” in front of a cheering crowd in Bali, which included many Filipinos.
