Moe Set Wine1Myanmar on October 3 selected its first Miss Universe contestant to represent the country in more than 50 years.

Moe Set Wine, 25, a US-educated business graduate, will take her place on stage at the global beauty pageant in Moscow in November, reflecting dramatic political and social changes in the former junta-ruled nation, which last fielded a Miss Universe contender in 1961.

Moe Set won over judges and the audience at the Miss Universe Myanmar competition at the National Theater in Yangon.

“I feel like now I am part of the history and I feel like a soldier that is doing something for the country and my people,” the winner said after her selection.

The beauty pageant, hosted by Myanmar hip hop star Sai Sai and model Tin Moe Lwin, featured 20 contestants who competed in three rounds – traditional dress, swimwear and ball gowns.

Organisers hope that Moe Set Wine’s participation will bring Myanmar more recognition in the international arena.

“Now this is the first goal for Myanmar, we are ready to go to an international stage and we want to show our Myanmar heart and that we’re really happy and very proud to be Myanmar,” said co-host Tin Moe Lwin.

Yangon-born Moe Set Wine finished her education from Dagon University with English Major. She continued her education in US and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in marketing from California Lutheran University.
