Myanmar Seeks To Attract More International Educational Institutions

Foreign education providers are showing increasing interest in opening branches in Myanmar, with several already having started to invest in the country in the past year after the government loosened regulations for the launch of private educational institutions.

Officials of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI) recently met with private education providers from the US, UK and Canada to discuss their interest in investing in the country’s education industry. Among them were, for instance, representatives from UK’s Manchester Metropolitan University.

Acting Director General of Directorate of Investment and Company Administration, U Thant Sin Lwin, said that Chinese education providers were also interested in setting up teaching centers for Chinese languages.

UMFCCI vice chair U Maung Maung Lay said as an emerging economy, Myanmar needed a trained workforce and these education providers would be able to fill the void for high-quality education.

To recap, the Myanmar Investment Commission in April 2018 announced that foreign private education providers can set up basic, technical, vocational and training schools as well as higher education and subject-based schools.

Since the education industry opened up, Myanmar Strategic Holdings in cooperation with Singapore-based private school operator Auston Institute of Management has set up the Yangon American International School, US tertiary education provider Kaplan has set up Kaplan Myanmar University College and the International Language & Business Center, founded by Myanmar businessman Tin Maung Win and operated in cooperation with US universities, is currently expanding in the country. Win also launched the American University of Myanmar, with both institutions having American academic curricula.

Other private international schools are, among others, the Lycée Francais International de Rangoun, The British School Yangon, Singapore International School, Brainworks Total International School Yangon, Dulwich College Yangon, Thalun International School, Bahan International Science Academy and International School of Myanmar. Apart from the Lycée, which has a French curriculum, the curricula are British and American. Some additionally offer the Swiss international baccalaureate standard.
