Chinese-touristsThailand is being run over by Chinese tourists as it is expected that no fewer than 10 million visitors from China will come to the kingdom in 2016, after total tourism numbers last year reached around 29.8 million.

Just for the four first month of this year, 3,445,501 Chinese tourists visited Thailand, a 27-per cent jump compared to the same period last year, making the target of 10 millions most likely in 2016, according to Srisuda Wannapinyosak, Deputy Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

Last year, 7.9 million Chinese tourists arrived in Thailand, more than total visitors from the ASEAN region. The reasons for the popularity of Thailand among Chinese travelers is seen in the rising number of budget flights from numerous Chinese cities into the country, low-priced package tours and movies about Thailand popular in China.

However, just about three million Chinese tourists were reported to come with a tour group, but the rest would travel on their own and be considered “quality tourists” who might spend an average of 5,000 baht ($141) per person per day or some 50,000 baht ($1,410) per person per trip.

Among other source countries, tourists from Malaysia, South Korea and Japan are at the top in numbers. As Russia recovers from its economic woes and the weak ruble, visitor numbers from there rose by around 15 per cent between January and April this year. The number of Indian tourist also grew substantially.

The most important source countries in Europe are the UK, Germany, France and Sweden. The number of US tourists rose by around 14 per cent, and the number of visitors from the Middle East grew by 11 per cent.
