The country is the biggest consumer of Samsung phones, so they hope to solidify their hold on the area’s consumers.  The smartphone will use the Android operating system, and features a larger screen and dual-core application processors.  It hopes to be strong competition to the Apple iPhone.  Samsung is in the midst of legal proceedings with Apple over alleged patent and design issues.

Samsung has set a target goal of selling 10 million of the new smartphones this year.  The original Galaxy S has sold almost 14 million units. 2 million of those were sold in South Korea, so the company hopes to repeat its previous success in the area.
