Sarawak Bakun Dam sells power cheaply

Sarawak Bakun Dam sells power cheaplyAfter agreeing to purchase the Bakun dam’s power at the bargain rate of 6.25 sen per kwh, Sarawak Energy Bhd has announced it has found the first four of its major customers: Press Metal, OM Materials, Asia Minerals Ltd and Tokuyama Corp.  They will purchase about 1,300 megawatts of the 2,400 megawatts produced.  The other 50% of the power will be sold to other interested companies in the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy.

The state-run Sarawak Energy also has plans for another dam in Murum and a coal-fired electricity plant to meet the needs of its rapidly expanding region.  The 1.5% annual increase imposed on the current rate is said to offset the rock-bottom prices announced, but it is still called one of the lowest tariffs in Asian history.
