Thailand Is World’s Largest Durian Exporter

Thailand was the world’s largest durian exporter in the first half of this year thanks to free trade agreements with many countries, according to the Department of Trade Negotiations, with Malaysia now trailing now on second place.

Oramon Sapthaweetham, director-general of the department, said on August 23 that Thai durian exports were valued at $817 million, having increased by 45 per cent from the same period last year. Major markets were China and Southeast Asian nations to where 79 per cent of Thai durian fruits were shipped, she said.

In the first half of 2019, exports to China were estimated at $425 million, increasing by 70 per cent, and those to Southeast Asian nations amounted to $219 million, up 19 per cent, year-on-year, Oramon said.

Thailand’s free trade agreements with 16 countries had boosted its durian exports. The zero-per cent tariff deals exists with Australia, Brunei, Cambodia, Chiles, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Myanmar, New Zealand, Peru, Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam.

In the first half of this year, fresh durian fruits accounted for 44 per cent of total Thai fruit exports.

In addition to Thailand, the fruit is mainly cultivated in Malaysia and Indonesia.
