Thailand ready to host meeting between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un

Thailand’s Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai on April 24 said teh country was willing to host a meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

“Thailand is ready to facilitate and host the talks,” Pramudwinai was responding to questions from reporters who noted that Bangkok was one of several possible venues mentioned for such a summit, which Trump said could take place in early June to discuss North Korea’s denuclearisation. It would be the first-ever meeting between the leaders of the two countries.

However, the Thai government has not been contacted by US authorities about the possibility.

“The fact is we haven’t discussed anything,” Pramudwinai said.

Thailand has one of the largest US embassies in the region and also has fairly friendly relations with both the US and North Korea. Speculation about other possible venues for the summit includes Singapore, Geneva, Helsinki, Stockholm, Oslo and Ulanbataar.

Trump last week said that although he’s looking ahead optimistically to a historic meeting with Kim, he could still pull out if he feels it’s “not going to be fruitful.”
