Thailand’s next faux pas with Hitler

Reading Time: 2 minutes

hitler2The uproar over the infamous Hitler chicken restaurant in Thailand has not even cooled down, and the country already has its next issue with displaying portraits of the German Nazi leader in public.

But this time it is not an ignorant restaurant owner, but Thailand’s renowned Chulalongkorn University, one of the country’s top educational institutions, that is displaying a mural depicting Adolf Hitler along with a group of superheroes on the wall of one of its buildings.

The banner was hung up on July 10 outside the university’s Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts building and caught the eye of a Bangkok blogger not only because of the display itself but also because some passers-by were performing Nazi salutes.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center, a US-based organisation named after Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal, condemned the university and its faculty for the mural.

“Hitler as a superhero? Is he an appropriate role model for Thailand’s younger generation— a genocidal hate monger who mass murdered jews and gypsies and who considered people of colour as racially inferior?” asked Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

“This mural has been on display for days nearby the university’s Faculty of History building. We are outraged by those who created this travesty, at the young person posing using the Nazi ‘Sieg Heil’ salute and appalled and disgusted by the total silence of the university’s elite for the apparent failure of anyone demanding its removal,” he added.

No statement from the university was available so far.
