The sixth edition of the Royal Trophy will be held on December 14-16,  2012 at the Empire Hotel & Country Club in the Sultanate of Brunei, organisers announced. The annual competition will bring Asia and Europe together in a unique series of continental team golf matches.

The inaugural five editions of the Royal Trophy delivered highly competitive contests with Europe, led by the five-time Major winner Ballesteros, prevailing in the first two encounters; Asia securing a historic victory in the third match under the captaincy of Naomichi ‘Joe’ Ozaki and Colin Montgomerie leading the Europeans to the narrowest victories in the fourth and fifth tournaments.  In 2010 the competition was decided on the final putt of the final hole in the final singles match.  In the latest edition played at Black Mountain Golf Club in Hua Hin, Thailand, the Europeans sealed a dramatic ‘recovery’ reversing a 6 to 2 deficit going into the final day, and miraculously winning six and halving two of the eight singles matches to retain stewardship of the Royal Trophy.

“Over the past six months we have undertaken a significant host venue selection process for the next five editions of the Royal Trophy and received applications from numerous nations, municipalities and golf clubs.  It was challenging to select only five host venues from the large number of very high quality applications,” said Royal Trophy Co-Managing Director Ivan Ballesteros.

“The Empire Hotel & Country Club has prevailed in being nominated the host venue for the sixth edition of the Royal Trophy.  Their facilities are spectacular and their management team has undertaken to make all necessary efforts to ensure that the next edition of the Royal Trophy is a great success.  We congratulate the Empire Hotel & Country Club and the Sultanate of Brunei and look forward to a magnificent series of matches in December of 2012,” added Royal Trophy Co-Managing Director Lincoln Venancio.

The sixth edition of the Royal Trophy will be held in honour of the great Seve Ballesteros who passed away on 7 May 2011 following a most courageous two and a half year battle against brain cancer.

“On behalf of the Royal Trophy Players’ Committee, I would like to officially announce that the sixth edition of the Royal Trophy will be held in honor of Seve.  This will be a very special occasion for all of us who played with Seve and for all the people who were touched by Seve’s career and personality.  It will be an opportunity to celebrate Seve’s life and an important moment for the world golf community,” said two-time Masters champion and Royal Trophy Players’ Committee Member José Maria Olazábal.

“It is most appropriate that the next edition of the Royal Trophy will be played in Seve’s memory.  He made a great contribution to our sport and this will be a very special occasion to honour him,” stated six-time Major winner and Royal Trophy Players’ Committee Member Sir Nick Faldo.

“We are confident that the sixth edition of the Royal Trophy will be a remarkable series of matches and that the Empire Hotel & Country Club will prove an excellent host venue.  We are looking forward to this historic date for golf and to witness the matches being played in memory of Seve,” added Paul McGinley, a former three-time European Ryder Cup player and a Member of the Royal Trophy Players’ Committee.

The Empire Hotel & Country Club is located on the north eastern tip of Borneo on the doorstep of one of Asia’s oldest rainforests.  The palatial resort hotel set in a private 180-hectare estate of manicured gardens features a spectacular 12-storey marble and gold lobby, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Championship Golf Course where the Royal Trophy matches will be played and offers unsurpassed five-star luxury.  Voted the Best Golf Resort in Asia Pacific in 2010, the resort’s regal hospitality also include an impressive array of international restaurants, multiple water and sporting facilities, a spa, a theater, a cinema and a majestic 1,500 seating Grand Hall.

“We were thrilled just to be considered as a possible venue for the Royal Trophy for any one of the years from 2012 to 2016. But now, to have actually been bestowed with the great honour of being the host venue for the sixth edition of this very prestigious tournament in 2012, it is indeed a dream come true for Brunei, for Brunei golf and for the Empire Hotel & Country Club, its owners and its staff. We realize that the pressure is now on for us to do our utmost to take the Royal Trophy tournament to new heights, following its phenomenal success in Thailand in the preceding five years. This is especially so, as the 2012 tournament is dedicated to the recognition and memory of its founder, the legendary Seve Ballesteros. And, just to add a little bit more pressure, Brunei will be the first country to host the Royal Trophy outside of Thailand. The mere thought of being entrusted to be the host venue for staging a tournament between the finest golfers of Asia and of Europe, is indeed very exciting for all of us and one which we are fully committed to converting into a truly memorable event for all concerned,” said Desmond Acheson, General Manager of The Empire Hotel and Country Club.

Known as the Abode of Peace, Brunei is one of only two Sultanates in the world. With a monarchy stretching back 600 years, Brunei is a unique preserve of modernity, royalty and nature.  Located in Southeast Asia, it is a land of magnificent architectural grandeur, lush rain forest and crystal-clear waters of the South China Sea.
