A brawl broke out in the early hours of July 31 at the Longhorn Saloon in Ao Nang beach in the Krabi province of Thailand.

Bobby Ray Carter, 51 was with his son when they both participated in “jam with the band,” an event which offers customers a free CD of their sing-along with the house band. Carter insisted on singing with the band even after his turn was up, gradually growing further tensions.

“Witnesses said Carter got angry when the band played Hotel California instead of the song he requested and he refused to step down,” Krabi city police chief Col. Taksin Pochakorn said.

The band stopped playing; Carter still sang and became further enraged, knocking over their tip box and demanding that his gratuity be returned.

Both Carter and his 27-year-old son left the bar and confronted the band outside, engaging and further escalating their disputes. Tensions dramatically rose, as words turned into fists. An iron rod was jammed in Carter’s chest and his son suffered head injuries.

“The father knocked me to the ground first, and I could not breathe because he was sitting on my chest,” Ratikorn Romin, 27, reportedly said in his statement to police. “Then I spotted a sharp piece of metal nearby, so I grabbed it and stabbed him.”

Ratikorn and his band mates – Sathit Somsa, 40, and Nopanan Yoddecha, 26 – are all facing charges. Reports have been conflicting of the exact charges, with some reporting death by physical attack and others stating assault and murder. Sathit was also charged with possession of an illegal firearm.

The Carter family released a statement saying, “[Claims that Carter] provoked the men who attacked and killed him are without merit. [We are] calling on the Thai justice system to hold these criminals accountable to the fullest extent of the law for this senseless loss of life.”
