AirAsia India to take off in October

AirAsia’s newest venture, AirAsia India, is set to take to the skies in October 2013, the company’s founder and CEO Tony Fernandes said on July 2.
AirAsia has entered a joint venture with India’s industry conglomerate Tata Group and has applied for the necessary licenses to establish flight operations. Fernandes said that AirAsia India will focus on the south of the subcontinent and will be based in Chennai. Other operational bases could also be at Bangalore or Kochi.
AirAsia will initially invest $30 million into the joint venture. Recruitment for the Indian operations has started. Fernandes said that given the Indian population of 1.3 billion people, AirAsia’s Indian operation could develop into the largest by passenger numbers within the AirAsia Group.
He also eyes to enter the Indian insurance market with his Tune Money venture. Tune Hotels are already present in India.
