ASEAN ministers call for ICT masterplan
ASEAN’s Information and Communication (ICT) ministers unanimously called for the immediate commencement of the post-2015 ICT Masterplan, Bernama reported. This is to ensure that there is no gap between the 2015 Asean ICT Masterplan and the next masterplan targeted for the 2016-2020 period.
“We need to react quickly to our Leaders’ call for all sectors to enhance the competitiveness of Asean and to position the region strategically given the current global economic situation,” said Malaysia’s Minister of Communication and Multimedia Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek. Ahmad Shabery was in Singapore on November 15, attending the 13th Asean Telecommunications and IT Ministers Meeting (Telmin) and related meetings with Telmin’s dialogue partners China, Japan and South Korea, as well as the International Telecommunications Union, Telmin’s development partner.
Referring to the 23rd Asean Summit held last month in Brunei, Ahmad Shabery said: “Our leaders have spoken and all the ministers are to start work on the post-2015 integration as well as develop targets towards that.”
“ICT is a key driver of the economy as well as the Asean integration process which means that we cannot afford to be lagging in making sure that our development policies and programmes are on track as well as forward looking,” he added.
At the end of their two-day meeting, Telmin urged all ASEAN ICT policy makers and regulators to start immediately with the planning process to ensure that there was continuity in ASEAN’s development plans and policies for the ICT sector, both approaching 2015 and beyond.
