Bakun dam to begin production in Sarawak
After facing many delays, the Bakun Dam is set to open by September in Sarawak. Though its total capacity will exceed 2,400 megawatts, initial production is expected to be about 300 megawatts from the highly anticipated electric project. Sarawak Hidro will operate the dam, and Sarawak Energy will purchase the power at a rate of 6.25 sen and resell it.
Sarawak Energy has already lined up four major companies to purchase the initial power, with about 16 more expressing interest. The aptly named Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) is taking shape and attracting energy-intensive industries to the area, which is primed for development. Sarawak Hidro is expected to clear about RM36 million this year on the Dam.
