Businessman from the Philippines tops the 10 richest in ASEAN list 2015

henry-syWhile tycoons from China and India dominate the richest in Asia list, these 10 billionaires will find solace in topping the regional list in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Chinese Filipino businessman Henry Sy Sr. tops the list in the Philippines and across ASEAN with an accumulated wealth estimated by Forbes to be $14.2 billion. The self made billionaire of SM Investments Corporation has retained his top spot as his fellow countrymen moved around the listings from last year.

The list reflects the position of the economic powerhouses in ASEAN with 5 out of the 6 largest economies making up the top 10 richest, with only Vietnam missing out. More than half the list contain businessmen of Chinese ancestry.

Henry Sy holds on to richest person in the Philippines and with the continued growth of SM Investments Corp takes over the the title of richest person in ASEAN. One of his recent ventures, City of Dreams Manila Resort and Casino cost $1.3 billion to develop. The resort was promoted by Hollywood stars including Robert De Niro and Leonardo Di Caprio.

2. Dhanin Chearavanont (Thailand)                                                                                                                            

Net Worth: $13.6 billion

The Thai businessman based in Bangkok and with ancestral roots in Shantou (China) previously held the title of richest person in ASEAN but has slipped to second in the list. Recently rebuffed by British retailer Tesco Plc after he signaled he wants to buy its most valuable international unit, its Thai business.
