Ford sets up assembly plant in Cambodia

US car maker Ford Motor Company finally decided to set up an assembly plant in Cambodia for the production of its Ford Ranger and Ford Everest model lines after the country’s Council for the Development of Cambodia, the highest decision-making public agency private and public sector investment in Cambodia, approved the project in September last year.
Ford said it will invest $21 million in a first phase through its local partner and distributor, RMA Automotive Cambodia, in an assembly line with production planned to commence in April this year.
The plant, which is being set up in Krakor Special Economic Zone in Cambodia’s Pursat Province some 160 kilometers northwest of Phnom Penh, will span over four hectares and plans to assemble a total of 4,500 vehicles in the first year for the Cambodian market alone. The factory will help create up to 500 jobs for locals on the production line.
Improving living standards by job creation
The factory would contribute to improving the living standards of the people and alleviating poverty in the province, namely by generating jobs for locals, Pursat provincial governor Mao Thonin said.
There are also plans to attract some of Ford’s suppliers to produce components at the location of the factory, he added.
RMA Automotive Cambodia is Ford’s local partner in Cambodia, distributing Ford cars alongside Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles and John Deere agricultural machines. RMA also runs a Ford service center in Phnom Penh’s north-central Toul Sangke district.
In 2020, the Ford Ranger was Cambodia’s best-selling new vehicle, according to RMA’s annual report for that year.
