Indonesia asks Tesla to produce electric vehicles in the country

Indonesia has urged US electric vehicle maker Tesla to manufacture its cars and vehicle batteries in the country, Bloomberg News cited the nation’s President Joko Widodo as saying.

Widodo said in an interview that Indonesia wants to build up a “huge ecosystem of electric cars” rather than just draw on its natural resources to make batteries.

The president and senior government officials held meetings earlier this year with Tesla’s founder Elon Musk, asking him to consider Indonesia as a car manufacturing hub, on top of making batteries as already planned.

Tesla representatives did not immediately comment on the report.

Tesla to buy nickel from Indonesia

Luhut Pandjaitan, a senior Indonesian minister overseeing talks with Tesla, earlier in August said that Tesla has struck deals worth a total of about $5 billion to buy nickel products from nickel processing companies operating out of Indonesia’s Morowali regency on Sulawesi island. The nickel materials will be used in Tesla’s lithium batteries.

Pandjaitan added his ministry was still negotiating with Tesla, noting that Musk was “busy with domestic matters, including Twitter.”

During their meeting in May, Widodo invited Musk to visit Indonesia in November when the country will host a leaders’ summit for the Group of 20 major economies.

Strong global interest in electric vehicle production in Indonesia

Companies that have invested or have announced their planned investment in electric vehicle manufacturing in Indonesia include Toyota and Mitsubishi, as well as Hyundai.

SGMW Motor Indonesia, part of a joint venture of SAIC Motor, General Motors and Wuling Motors, is already operating an electric vehicle assembly factory in the country.
