Internet usage in Vietnam takes off

Vietnam is home to one of the world’s fastest-growing online population, according to a new report by US-based Internet marketing firm eMarketer.

In its report Vietnam Online: Mobile Internet Will Drive Growth the company says that driven by substantial investments from the government, Vietnam now boasts an internet penetration rate of 35.6 per cent, according to November 2012 data from the government’s Vietnam Internet Network Information Center.

Vietnam’s internet user base has dramatically increased during the past 10 years, from 3.1 million in 2003 to 31.2 million in October 2012.

Other main findings of the report are:

  • 40 per cent of Vietnam’s online population is between the ages of 15 and 24.
  • 85 per cent of internet users use it to read the news, 77 per cent to check email, 71 per cent for browsing, 69 per cent for work and study and 66 per cent for entertainment.
  • Watching video is by far the most popular pastime, with web video having a penetration rate of 90.2 per cent.
  • Facebook is currently the number one social media site in Vietnam, whose usage grew by 88 per cent from October 2011 to October 2012.
  • In 2012, Vietnam’s revenue for e-commerce was $700 millionand is expected to hit $1.3 billion by 2015.
  • The market value of e-commerce is expected to hit $2.8 billion by 2015.
