Malaysia condom maker launches durian flavour
As part of its latest investment drive after a successful IPO on November 6, Malaysia’s Karex, the world’s largest condom maker, is launching a number of new products, among them a durian-flavoured condom.
Other innovations include textured and unusually shaped condoms, among them a tattoo-like textured condom for enhanced stimulation, to help introduce variety inside the bedroom. The company is also working on a thinner condom that is both strong and durable and has created a condom that tastes after Pina Colada.
The durian-flavoured condom (without the fruit’s characteristic thorns) recently went on sale in Indonesia, a nation known for its preference for the smelly fruit. The biggest market for the condom is Greater Jakarta. Durian condoms are already on sale, however, by Indonesian condom maker Simplex.
The the newly listed firm is further eyeing a 42-million-ringgit ($13.3 million) investment to increase its production capacity by 100 per cent, hitting an estimated 6 billion condoms in 2015. This will be equivalent to 22 per cent of the global condom market, which, by 2015, is forecast to reach 27 billion pieces annually.
Though it is not being too much emphasised on, the condom industry is one of the success models for Malaysia in industrialisation. The world’s largest condom production base is located in Pontian in the southern Malaysian state of Johor.
Karex’s shares went up 32 per cent on the first trading day and, as per November 25, were still holding in that range.
