Malaysia to join GCC Security Council

GCC headsMalaysia will serve as non-permanent member of the Security Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the political and economic union of Arab states, for the period 2015-2016, reports said.

The Kuwait Ambassador to Malaysia, Saad Abdullah Al Asousi said the support was announced by the Mission of the State of Kuwait to the United Nations on behalf of the GCC during a recent meeting of the Asian Group.

“May Malaysia succeed in this quest and I express the confidence of those countries that the nomination will strengthen, with no doubt the efforts of the Security Council in the carrying out its main mission of keeping international peace and security,” he said in a statement on February 4 in Kuala Lumpur.

The statement said that Malaysia will take the place of South Korea as GCC Security Council non-permanent member, whose term of office expires at the end of 2014.

GCC is a political and economic union of Arab states bordering the Arabian Gulf, namely Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and the State of Kuwait which is the current head of the bloc.
