Myanmar invites bids for Internet and fibre optic network
Myanmar Posts & Telecommunications has invited an open tender for IP transit services with a total capacity of 10+ Gbps, to be used for a fiber optic Internet backbone, Myanmar-based news service Thura Swiss reported on June 14. The payment will be made in foreign currency, it added.
Bids are out for a Myanmar – Thailand cross border cable at Myawaddy and a connection to the Sea-Me-We 3 submarine cable that connects most of the ASEAN countries.
Currently, Myanmar has just 14,000 kilometers of fiber and some 1,800 telecom masts. The internet penetration in the country is below 1 per cent. Less than 10 per cent, or 5.4 million of its 60 million population, have a phone subscription.
Recently, the bidding round for two telecom licenses has attracted a lot of interest of multinational telecom companies, with Qatar Teloecom/Ooredoo having comitted to invest $15 billion. On June 27, the Myanmar government will announce the winners for the licenses.
There is a need for 15,000 telecom towers and thousands of kilometers of fiber optic infrastructure in the country, according to a report on Myanmar’s telecom sector by consulting firm Deloitte.
