Myanmar-Laos friendship bridge to open in 2015

Friendship-Bridge-from-Laos-to-MyanmarA new bridge connecting the border regions of Tarchilaik Township in Shan State and Lwenintha Province of Laos across the Mekong river is due to be completed by March of 2015, Eleven Myanmar reported. The Myanmar-Laos Friendship Bridge will be 691.6 meters long and 8.5 meters wide.

Myanmar signed an agreement with Laos on March 22, 2013 last year to build the bridge. Thirty-five per cent of construction is now completed.

Upon final completion of the bridge, the two countries are expected to see smooth and speedy road transportation and the bridge will contribute towards swift flow of commodities and better economic development, officials said.

The Lao border with Myanmar is defined by theMekong river, which flows from southern China to the Mekong delta in southern Vietnam.  The two countries established diplomatic ties in July 1955, but the volume of trade between Laos and Myanmar is small compared to that with Laos’ other neighbours.
