Myanmar is ready to take on the leadership role in ASEAN when it will chair the bloc in 2014, a crucial year to prepare the region for the ASEAN Economic Community technically due to launch by end-2015.

Myanmar President Thein Sein said on the occasion of the 46th anniversary of the founding of ASEAN on August 8 that his country will support ASEAN in “gaining the momentum of fulfilling the targets and laying down the ASEAN Vision beyond 2015.”

He added that Myanmar’s efforts to implement the ASEAN Community Blueprints at home have positive effects on the country’s political, economic and social objectives.

He called on the ASEAN member states to cooperate with each other while trying to develop individually, saying that Myanmar is committed to making “its greatest possible contribution” to the ASEAN community by taking advantage of the position as a land bridge between ASEAN and its dialogue partners.

Myanmar is taking over the ASEAN chairmanship for the first time since it joined the regional bloc in 1997.
