Online gamers donate for Philippine typhoon victims
EVE Online, a multiplayer online role-playing games developed by Icelandic game company CCP, has rinstalled its PLEX for GOOD programme which allows players to donate virtual money they earned in the game for charity causes, this time to areas in the Philippines affected by Typhoon Haiyan.
Some $100,000 in previous PLEX for GOOD donations have already gone towards victims of natural disasters in Haiti, Japan, and the US. Overall, the EVE Online community has raised more than $150,000 for charitable causes since it first started collecting, following the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami.
PLEX is an in-game currency in EVE Online. For each unit of PLEX that a player donates to the character “CCP PLEX for GOOD,” CCP contributes $15 to the Icelandic Red Cross to fund their efforts in the Philippines. CCP is also encouraging players to participate by giving away a Sisters of EVE Food Relief T-shirt to anyone who donates a PLEX. CCP will accept donation until December 7.
EVE Online was launched in 2003 and reached over 500,000 subscribers in 2013. The current version of EVE Online is Rubicon, released on November 19, 2013. The game is set in a science fiction space. Characters pilot customisable ships through a galaxy of over 7,500 star systems. Players can participate in a number of in-game professions and activities, including mining, piracy, manufacturing, trading, exploration and combat and earn virtual currency.
