Pakistan invites Indonesian investors

Pakistan’s president Asif Ali Zardari

Pakistan’s president Asif Ali Zardari invited Indonesia to invest in his country’s energy and agricultural sector during a meeting of the Developing Eight (D-8) countries in Islamabad on November 21.

Zadari said the two nations had “many complementarities and can draw tremendous mutual benefits through increased economic and commercial cooperation.”

He also called for the implementation of the Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) that was signed in February 2012 and between Pakistan and Indonesia and emphasised the need for the two countries to move forward towards Free Trade Agreement

Zadari said that Pakistan presented “a tremendous potential to Indonesian investors in the energy sector” and added that Pakistan could benefit from the expertise Indonesia has gained in running thermal power plants on coal. He said that 186 billion tonnes of huge coal reserves are ready to be converted into electricity, gas and diesel and Indonesian investors could avail this huge potential “to the mutual benefit of the people of the two countries.”

Pakistan could also benefit from the experience of Indonesia in the field of coconut and oil palm management and wanted “to learn from the experience of Indonesia.”

The D-8 groups Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey, with an estimated total population of one billion.

Its ambitious goal is to increase trade between member countries from $130 billion to $507 billion by 2018.
