Penang sings with PAAB over water

Both the Prime Minister of Malaysia and the Chief Minister of Penang were on hand to witness Penang’s official agreement with the federal government’s agency, Pengurusan Aset Air Berhad.  This is the first time an Opposition-led state has signed such a water restructuring deal, and brings hope that others will follow suit.

The deal allows PAAB to take over the distribution of state-run water facilities.  Penang will cede their water assets to PAAB, along with liability from the federal government.  In return, Penang will receive a sizable grant to fund the expansion of their Mengkuang Dam, along with the right to set the rate of the water sold to residents and businesses.
