Philippines, Thailand focus on Cambodia
Cambodia’s booming construction sector has led to major ASEAN powers seeking greater business relations with the fledgling economy, namely the the Philippines and Thailand
In turn, Cambodian officials have expressed interest in launching direct flights between Manila and Phnom Penh, marking improved relations after a hard patch occurred when Cambodia blocked efforts by the Philippines to recognise territorial disputes in the South China Sea.
During an official visit, Philippine Vice President Jejomar Binay told media that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen also supports improved ties in the rice trade.
Furthermore, within the ASEAN bloc, Cambodia is now considered to hold the highest potential for Thai investors, according to Roongrote Benjamasuthin, director of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce’s ASEAN Business & Economic Center.
“We should take advantage of the geographical proximity between Thailand and Cambodia while the Thai government has planned to build and expand roads and railways to link the two neighbouring countries. Part of these infrastructure [projects] would be serviceable when the ASEAN Economic Community finally takes off in the next few years,” Roongrote said.
Small and medium enterprises and trans-national conglomerates in Thailand have been encouraged to follow this advice and set up shop if the venture capital presents itself.
