Sarawak announces Hydro power deal

While remaining tightlipped about many key details, the Chief Minister of Sarawak announced a deal in which Sarawak Energy and Sarawak Hidro will secure a power purchase agreement for rights to the Bakun dam.  When fully operational, the dam can produce up to 2,400 megawatts of electricity, which will be used specifically for Sarawak industries.  It currently produces about 300 megawatts while still under construction.

Officials refused to disclose the rate secured for electricity in the contract, but called it “favorable” to the state.  Nor would they discuss the rate that they anticipated to charge.  They will also impose an undefined water levy on Sarawak Hidro annually.
