Singapore aims to become self-sustainable in food production
The Singapore government has added another $10 million into a fund to help Singapore become self-sustainable in food production, the Minister for National Development, Khaw Boon Wan, announced on October 10 according to the Straits Times.
Nearly $20 million of the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority’s (AVA) food fund has been spent since its launch in 2009. It has benefited 71 companies and 141 projects and resulted in local farm production by 550 tonnes of fish and 360 tonnes of vegetables so far.
“For the new tranche, eligible farmers can look forward to greater funding support for quality seeds and fish fry. We will also simplify the application process,” said Khaw.
He was speaking at AVA’s inaugural food industry convention for industry players to talk about trends, developments and opportunities in the food industry. Singapore imports more than 90 per cent of its food from 160 countries.
