Summing up Southeast Asia’s beauty queens

Beauty is a big business.

At the national level, winners of beauty pageants are showered with an inordinate amount of prizes and social status that often belies their younger years. Sponsors line up to pour money into the pageants giving away tens of thousands of dollars in gifts and cash prizes. They then become beauty ambassadors, representing their nation in subjects that go beyond the skin.

The annual main event that endeavours to showcase the perfections of this industry is Miss Universe pageant, coming up this November.

The winner of this international event bears a 1,371-gemstone crown with an estimated value of over $120,000 and takes on a position as an international spokesperson for charities and feel-good causes. A reminder of this responsibility, the large rubies adorning the crown signify the beauty queen’s solidarity and understanding of HIV/Aids.

Below are the four lovely ladies that have been selected from ASEAN for the Miss Universe 2013 pageant so far this year. Myanmar and Singapore are due to hold their national competitions later in June and July, respectively.
