Thailand fails with World Expo 2020 bid
Thailand’s bid to host the World Expo 2020 has been rejected by the Bureau of International Expositions (BIE) after the Thai government failed to support the bureau with necessary information about the the project’s financial, legislative, organisational and diplomatic aspects, the Bangkok Post reported on June 12.
A BIE team visited the planned location, the temple town of Ayutthaya, north of Bangkok, from Jan 28 to Feb 1 2013 and gave the government until April 5 to answer its questions. However, the government did not deliver the required information, and the BIE eventually accepted a recommendation from its inquiry mission team to drop Thailand’s bid although the team said that, in general, Ayutthaya had the potential to host the grand event.
BIE secretary said it had earlier sent a letter to the Thai government via the foreign ministry’s ambassador asking it to confirm its backing for the plan and reply to the bureau before April 5. However, it did not receive a response.
Business and tourism official in Thailand critised the governmetn of being “uncommitted” to the World Expo.
The remaining countries on the bidder list are Russia, Turkey, the UAE and Brazil, whereby the UAE with its proposal to hold the event in Dubai is seen as a favourite.
A final decision by the BIE should be made in November 2013. Around 25 million visitors are expected at the World Expo 2020.
