karex condomsThe world’s largest condom maker, Malaysia’s Karex Bhd., a main manufacturer of Durex condoms, said after its recent initial public offering that it has plans to develop its own brand and to bore its way deeper into the Southeast Asian market, especially Thailand where demand for condoms is high.

Karex plans to build a new and bigger factory in Pontian, Johor. The construction of this new 7.28-hectare factory will begin early in 2014 and be completed by end of the year. At the same time, Karex intends to expand its manufacturing plants in Port Klang and Hat Yai, Thailand. The company is set to double its capacity and therefore widen the gap with its nearest competitor, Thai Nippon Rubber Industry Co Ltd.

Karex Bhd’shad its debut on the Bursa Malaysia on November 6. Its shares surged around 30 per cent on the first day, expanding 60 sen over its issue price of RM1.85 and became the top gainer for the day.

Karex raised $40 million from the listing. Out of that, $13.18 million will be used as capital expenditure to double manufacturing capacity to meet the ever-increasing global demand. In 2012, about 22.8 billion condoms were sold worldwide. In 2016, the figure is expected to rise to 30 billion.

The company holds about 10 per cent of the global market share and is exporting its products to 110 countries. Most of its revenue comes from condoms that Karex makes for other brands such as Durex. The rest of its revenue comes from sales of its own brands Carex and INNO, bulk sales to government-funded prevention and family planning programmes, as well as sales of catheters and lubricating jelly.
