Tourist arrivals in Myanmar’s capital Naypyitaw nearly double
The number of tourists arriving in Myanmar’s capital Naypyitaw by air during the first seven months of this year is almost double the number during the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism.
It said 10,621 foreign tourists had arrived in Naypyitaw International Airport between January and the end of July, up from 5,428 during the same period last year.
Most arrivals at Naypyitaw Airport have been Myanmar nationals but the number of foreign arrivals is rising fast, officials said.
Smaller number of foreign travelers have also arrived at Mawlamyaing and Myeik airports this year – 200 and 41, respectively, between January and end-July – compared to none last year, officials said.
Yangon and Mandalay airports continue to receive the lion’s share of foreign tourists. The tourism industry generated $534 million in receipts in 2012 and $926 million last year, according to the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism.
Tourist arrivals to Myanmar in first half of this year rose more than 40 per cent compared with the same period last year, according to government figures.
More than 1.6 million tourists entered the country from January to July, compared to 1.1 million in the year-ago period. Tourist arrivals have been on the rise since 2010, with a record-breaking 2 million last year.
According to the 2013-2020 Myanmar Tourism Master Plan the country is expected to welcome 3.1 million foreign visitors next year and more than 7 million by 2020.
