Toyota to sell Indonesia-made cars in Philippines
Japan’s car maker Toyota Motor Corp. and its affiliate Daihatsu Motor said on February 3 that they will start exporting compact cars manufactured by a Daihatsu subsidiary in Indonesia to the Philippines at the end of the month.
The compact vehicle, based on Toyota’s Agya currently sold in Indonesia, will be produced by Daihatsu’s Indonesian affiliate PT Astra Daihatsu Motor and sold under the Toyota brand in the Philippines.
The companies plan to initially export about 500 units a month. The vehicle’s name and retail price will be announced later this month.
The automakers said they are aiming to meet the needs of Filipino customers opting for eco-friendly and affordable compact cars, while utilizing Daihatsu’s technologies for manufacturing compact vehicles.
Toyota and Daihatsu view Indonesia as a vital global production and supply base and exported more than 138,000 finished vehicles from the country in 2013, accounting for over 80 per cent of total finished car exports from the Southeast Asian nation, according to the companies.
