UAE, Cambodia to boost tourism

Officials from the UAE and Cambodia’s tourism ministry recently signed an MoU in agreement that both nations will work to create more opportunities to improve tourism between Cambodia and the Middle East. The meeting also included talks about boosting bilateral trade and commerce.
In the seven months until August this year, tourist arrivals from the Middle East to Cambodia rose 23 per cent, from 5,163 in 2011 to 6,391, according to statistics compiled by the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism.
Tourism Minister Thong Khon is urging the private sector to arrange tailor-made travel packages to cater to the specific needs of Arabian tourists, such as those with access to halal food.
“The MoU is the gateway for both governments and the private sector to officially work together on the tourist sector,” Khon said at a press conference at Phnom Penh’s international airport earlier this week, reported the Phnom Penh Post.
“We’re focusing on advertising to attract investors from Dubai, and tourists and international tourists from across Arabia to Cambodia,” he added.
The ministry has eyed Dubai’s stunning connectivity with awe: everyday, some 500 flights from across the world land in Dubai, 10 alone coming from Thailand.
“Arabia is an emerging and good market for Cambodia,” Thon said. “Tourists from the region have been limited because of a lack of promotions and direct flights.”
Cambodia is looking to establish direct flights to the UAE soon, he added.
