UAE investors to develop tourism resort in Indonesia for up to $500 million

The Banyak Island group in Indonesia’s Aceh province will be part of the new resort

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is planning to develop a new tourism resort in Indonesia’s westernmost Aceh province at a planned investment range by private companies of up to $500 million, according to a report in Arab News.

Respective agreements have been signed by the two nations during a Jakarta visit of UAE energy and infrastructure minister Suhail Al Mazroui on March 5.

The tourism resort development project is expected to start in Aceh Singkil district at the southern coast of North Sumatra in May.

Nine islands could be part of the project

Plans are that some islands off the coast will be integrated into the resort. The islands targeted in the development project include Banyak Island, while other islands favoured by tourists are Tailana Island, Panjang Island, Palambak Island and Sikandang Island, where visitors can go snorkeling and diving to watch the unspoiled underwater world.

The projects targets, among others, holiday makers from the UAE which is just a five-hour flight away.

Main investors will be Murban Energy, a UAE-based company whose investment portfolio includes the development of luxury resorts in the Maldives and the Seychelles.

Aceh is one province of Indonesia where Islam is deeply rooted in the population, and it is the only part of Indonesia that has the legal right to apply Islamic law, or Shariah, in full.
