Vietnam is apparently aiming to enter the market of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles with home-made drones, a report by Chinese news agency Xinhua revealed on May 21.

The country held a number of test flights in the central Lam Dong province from May 17 to 19. The drones, produced by the Vietnam Space Technology Institute under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, successfully made 37 flights, according to the report.

The drones are the first of its kind for Vietnam. The Vietnamese scientists who built the drones began researching them back in 2008, and the project was picked up by the state in 2011.

According the the academy’s website, the drones are equipped with cameras, spectrometers and other devices and will be “used for [the] supervision of environmental natural resources in difficult direct approach territories; observation, communication and seashore rescue; exploration of natural resources, control of forest fires, and to follow the situation of national electricity system and transport,” VAST’s website has said.

However, the test flights have also been observed by the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of National Defense.

Vietnam has developed several activities in space technology lately. On May 4, it launched its first remote sensing satellite.
