Vietnam could produce its own single-shot Covid-19 vaccine

Vietnam’s health ministry on June 12 said that a Vietnamese enterprise was in talks with a US manufacturer regarding technology transfer to produce a one-dose Covid-19 vaccine with high protection, VnExpress wrote.
The names of the Vietnamese enterprise and the US manufacturer have not yet been revealed. The ministry on its website initially identified the company as domestic conglomerate Vingroup, but later removed the reference.
The negotiations with the US manufacturer were about the conditions for the transfer of mRNA vaccine technology. The said vaccine had finished its first and second phase clinical trials and would require only a single injection of five milligrams to give high protection, the ministry said, adding that it had only to be stored at temperatures of two to eight degrees Celsius which makes logistics easier.
Capacity of up to 200 million doses per year
The domestic production facility would be in line with the US manufacturer’s technology standards and would have a capacity of up to 200 million doses per year. Production is expected to start from the fourth quarter this year or from early 2022.
Current available Covid-19 vaccines require two injections, except for US pharmaceutical firm Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine, which needs only one. The new mRNA vaccines, which use synthetic ribonucleic acid to let the body produce an immunity response to a virus and are currently manufactured by Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech, have an efficacy of over 94 per cent against Covid-19.
The ministry said Vietnamese pharmaceutical firm Vaccine and Biological Production Company No. 1, or Vabiotech, was also in talks to soon receive a transfer of vaccine production technology, in this case with a Japanese partner.
Vabiotech further said it has cooperated with Russia to begin creating vials for Sputnik V this July, with an expected capacity of around five million doses a month. Russia said it too may transfer its vaccine production technology to Vietnam in the future.
