Vietnam rolls out roadmap to deploy artificial intelligence in economy, government

Vietnam’s government has unveiled an “artificial intelligence masterplan” which details how Vietnam plans to roll out artificial intelligence up to 2030. The move, part of Vietnam’s Industry 4.0 strategy, aims at developing artificial intelligence products and services with a competitive global edge and support the country’s transformation to become an upper-middle-income nation by addressing socio-economic development challenges and goals.

To promote automation, Industry 4.0 utilises, among other components, ultra high-speed connectivity, artificial intelligence, machine learning and real-time data.

Vietnam has set sights on becoming a developing, upper-middle-income country with a modern industry by 2030, when it celebrates the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

In particular, the Vietnam government wants to deploy artificial intelligence to raise public sector productivity and improve online public services to reduce processing and waiting times, public servant staff and other related costs. Using artificial intelligence to beef up national security is also high on the agenda.

Joining ASEAN’s top four in artificial intelligence

If realized, Vietnam’s 2030 targets will take it into ASEAN’s top four and the world’s top 50 countries in terms of artificial intelligence research, development and application, according to the masterplan.

In addition, the government in Hanoi wants Vietnam to establish 10 reputable homegrown artificial intelligence brands or services by 2030 and to set up three national big data storage centers to give businesses access to high-performance computing. Attracting domestic entrepreneurs and foreign investors will be key to delivering on all this, the masterplan noted.
