Vietnam to develop 41 smart cities

Vietnam’s economic planners have presented ideas to create smart cities in 41 out of the 63 provinces and cities in the country in order to “accelerate sustainable urban development,” local media reported.
The overall goal is to boost digital transformation in urban governance by creating smart government solutions including features such as digitised transport, transport, energy and society.
The plans are part of a politburo resolution on the planning, management and sustainable development of Vietnam’s urban areas by 2030 with a vision until 2045. Rural areas are also included in the transformation, with solutions for farmers and remote communities, among others.
The 41 provinces and cities already have or are currently developing smart urban development projects and a number of smart-city services, Nguyen Duc Hien, vice chairman of the Party Central Committee’s economic commission, said.
Broad variety of smart solutions
Among these solutions are smart tourism service applications, smart traffic solutions and security applications. There are also apps in other fields, such as smart education and smart healthcare.
Hien noted that smart city solutions still have a lot of potential in the country. While they initially focus on smart-city services for residents and administrators, solutions for smart urban planning and construction management would be the next step. Simultaneously, both government employees and citizens need to be upskilled and trained, he said.
Overall digital transformation
Eventually, the target for Vietnam is to undergo a digital transformation based on three pillars, namely digital governance, digital economy and digital society.
This would include the deployment of smart urban planning and management, smart transport and infrastructure, smart energy and in the long run would support the emergence of a smart economy, smart urbanites, smart communities and an overall digital society.
Smart address system
One example for a county-wide smart solution is the deployment of digital addresses for all Vietnamese households and businesses by 2025. The strategy intends to make the postal industry an essential element of the country’s digital economy infrastructure by making it a foundation for e-commerce.
By 2025, the strategy also plans to have all farmer households operating on e-commerce platforms developed by postal companies.
The Hanoi administrationhas will run a pilot project by combining the new national digital address platform with digital maps of the capital city starting with important central districts. Services that use digital addresses would be included, including tourism, fire prevention and fighting, as well as postal services.
