Vietnam’s aviation sector recovers fastest in the world
The domestic aviation market in Vietnam has been recovering at the fastest pace in the world so far this year with a growth of 123 per cent as compared to pre-Covid-19 pandemic times, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) said.
Among 25 analysed markets, Vietnam was followed by Mexico, Brazil, Russia, Spain, Turkey, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, India and Japan, the authority said on its website, citing an analysis by Airbus and the International Air Transport Association based on statistics of flight numbers as of mid-May based on available seat kilometers, or ASK, from flight tracking portal Flightradar24 and European airplane maker Airbus.
Dinh Viet Thang, head of CAAV, said Vietnam’s domestic aviation market has witnessed a boom in terms of both passenger and cargo traffic in the first half of 2022 so far after the government lifted all Covid-19 restrictions on domestic flights.
Expected 190-per cent jump in passengers
Airports across Vietnam have served 40.7 million passengers year-to-date, up 56.8 per cent year-on-year. The CAAV forecast airports nationwide would serve about 87.8 million passengers this year, jumping 190 per cent from last year.
The year-to-date figure includes five million foreign passengers, up 844 per cent in the period. Vietnam removed all restrictions on international flights on February 15.
On March 15, the government allowed quarantine-free entry and resumed its visa waiver for citizens of 24 countries, including Japan, South Korea and some European economies. It has also removed most other entry restrictions like medical declaration and Covid-19 tests.
Cargo throughput through Vietnam’s airports in the first six months of the year is estimated at 765,000 tonnes, up 30.6 per cent over the same period in 2021. It is expected that in the full year 2022, the throughput will reach about 1.5 million tonnes, up five per cent compared to 2021.
